Ted Lasso (Season 3 on Apple TV+ out March 15)
It's the happiest show out there, or at least it was the first season. The second round (sorry for mixing up the sports metaphors) of AppleTV+'s acclaimed football comedy took a dark turn, raising the stakes and delving into the personal lives of the sprawling leads. It mostly worked, garnering more Emmys and making fans even more hungry for a third (and supposedly final) season. And finally we are here! Succession (season four on Neon out March 27)
"I never thought it could go on forever. The ending was always on my mind." These words come from Jesse Armstrong, showrunner of Succession, whorecently approvedthe end is near. Yes, Season 4 of Succession about Roy's cheeky rats will be its last. According to Armstrong, the order is to finish the "muscular," "full," and "strong" things. The trailers didn't give much away, so it's hard to know what Tom Wambsgan's decision to side with Logan will be, but it's fair to say there will be conflict. "I'm on the shelf," said Jeremy StrongGQabout troubled son Kendall this season. "I feel like now that we're at the one-yard line, I really want to end this season and potentially the show in a way that delivers a real payload of what this journey has been about." ." Daisy Jones and the Six (limited series on Amazon Prime Video from March 3)
Was everything brown in the 1970s? So it seems in Daisy and the Six, the new television drama based on Taylor Jenkins Reid's best-selling novel. It tells the story of the rise of a legendary 1970s rock band who implode at the height of their fame, only to reunite years later to tell their truth about what really happened. Riley Keogh plays Daisy Jones, the lead singer who has a difficult relationship with fellow musician Billy Dunne, whose girlfriend can see the chemistry between the band's stars even amid all the brown curtains and carpet. It has a strong Fleetwood Mac vibe, but with Elvis' granddaughter in the lead role. /Bezirk Tara
The Mandalorian (Season 3 on Disney+ out March 1)
Yes, Baby Yoda is cute and cuddly. Yes, the little green thing with wide eyes and a flying cradle made The Mandalorian a hit. There is no doubt that this is the most popular Star Wars object. The question being asked ahead of The Mandalorian season 3 is: should it be? Star Wars started out as a series of movies, but lately we only get hit-or-miss TV shows. Boba Fett was definitely a failure, as was Obi-Wan. As Andor said, hardly anyone seemed to be watching, indicating that the goodwill toward the universe that George Lucas built is beginning to wane. Star Wars definitely needs to return to theaters, and while Baby Yoda always makes a delicious distraction, it seems a shame that this is the best Star Wars can muster.Tika, where are you?? Yellow Jackets (Season 2 on Neon out March 24)
New Zealand acting legend Melanie Lynskey was nominated for an Emmy for her performance in the mesmerizing first season of Yellow Jackets, and now she returns for more mysteries and lies in this acclaimed dark thriller. Yellowjackets jumps back and forth in time as it follows a New Jersey high school football team whose plane crashes in the middle of the Ontario desert in the 1990s, and the drama that unfolds 25 years later when the true story of the survival of the girls comes to light Der Striker. . Lynskey shines in every scene she's in, Christina Ricci, Tawny Cypress and Juliette Lewis return, and New Zealander Simone Kessell and honorary New Zealander Elijah Wood join the cast for season two. /TW
Rain Dogs (in neon from March 8th)
Speaking to you as a founding member of the Daisy May Cooper fan club, I say that in this busy month there is no show I am more excited for than Rain Dogs. On the show, the This Country star (who's also had impressive performances on Avenue 5 and Am I being Unreasonable?) does whatever it takes to keep her daughter away. If that sounds a bit like Outrageous Fortune, you've nailed it. I've seen a few of them, and if you miss Cheryl West, look no further. /SB
Projections (limited series on Apple TV+ starting March 24)
The stacked cast of the new Apple TV+ climate change anthology series could fulfill that word count alone. Meryl Streep, Marion Cotillard, Edward Norton, Diane Lane, Gemma Chan, Forest Whittaker, Daveed Diggs, Keri Russell, the list literally goes on and on. If the stars aren't enough to get you on board, it comes from author Scott Z. Burns, who may be our prime purveyor of on-screen global catastrophes. It's also an anthology series! If you don't like one episode, you might like the next one. /SB
Caged: Kai Kara France (documentaries on TVNZ+ from March 23)
Though perhaps less well known locally than his City kickboxing teammate Israel Adesanya, UFC fighter Kai Kara-France has built a solid reputation among MMA fans for his tenacious and fearless approach to fighting. The new documentary series Caged explores the parallels between the wars of Kara-France, who grew up in West Auckland, in the cage and her struggles outside, examining how she dealt with loss, how she learned, the training with raising a family to reconcile and how she found strength by embracing her taha. Luther: The Fallen Sun (on Netflix March 13)
Do you remember Luther? It was a mid-2010s crime series that went off the rails and people forgot. Well, it turns out they're still making Luthers, with this feature film continuing the life of televised morally ambiguous (evil) detective John Luther (Idris Elba). This film features the detective behind bars haunted by his failure to catch a cybernetic psychopath (so everyone on twitter I guess). So he decides to break out of prison to get the job done, presumably by violent means and even more violent ends./SB
The Wizard's Elephant (on Netflix March 17)
Well, this one looks good. Adapted from the 2009 novel of the same name, this animated film finds Peter (Noah Jupe) searching for his long-lost sister Adele (Pixie Davies), but to find her he must find a wizard with, yes, an elephant. You'll be forgiven if you think this sounds too cliche, but it's definitely worth checking out, as animation studio Animal Logic's work (the Lego movies) is usually worth the price of admission. Which in this case is a Netflix subscription! /SB
Boston Strangler (on Disney+ starting March 17)
Yes, there are many movies and TV shows made about serial killers. But what did I tell you? Does this have Kiera Knightley AND Carrie Coon? And that it's not about the ~torn~ minds of the killers themselves, but the intrepid lifestyle reporter who blew up the whole story? Produced by Ridley Scott, the Boston Strangler follows Loretta McLaughlin (Knightley), who becomes the first female journalist to expose the Boston Strangler murders of the 1960s.Alex Cash
